Wholesale vs retail fashion
The differences between wholesale and retail fashion — and which fits your business.
Updated 31 July 2026
Overview
Retail and wholesale are two different games. Retail sells one item at a time to end customers at full price. Wholesale sells in bulk to other retailers at a lower price. Both have their place — some brands do just one, some do both.
Retail
- Who you sell to: end customers.
- Volume per sale: one, sometimes a few.
- Price: full retail (2x–4x cost).
- Margin per item: high.
- Effort per sale: high — you handle marketing, customer service, and delivery per unit.
- Cash flow: consistent small amounts.
- Best for: brand-building, direct customer relationships, higher-margin items.
Wholesale
- Who you sell to: other retailers, boutiques, and resellers.
- Volume per sale: many, often 10–100+ units per order.
- Price: wholesale (1.5x–2x cost), so buyers can add their own margin.
- Margin per item: lower.
- Effort per sale: lower per unit — one negotiation, one order, one shipment.
- Cash flow: larger, less frequent payments.
- Best for: scaling volume, moving basics, working with reliable partners.
Retail on Javern
- Javern is primarily a retail marketplace.
- Buyers pay retail; you receive
(product subtotal × 0.95) + shipping − ₦500 service fee. See How are my earnings calculated?. - Direct customer chat, per-order engagement.
Wholesale off Javern
- Wholesale generally happens outside of Javern (via direct email, WhatsApp, showroom visits) — Javern is retail-oriented.
- Present a wholesale line sheet with items, wholesale prices, and MOQs (minimum order quantities).
- Take a deposit before producing large orders.
Doing both
Common approach for growing brands:
- Retail on Javern — direct-to-customer, higher margins, brand building.
- Wholesale off Javern — bulk orders to specific stockists, higher volume, lower margin.
Be careful about undercutting your stockists — if you retail the same piece cheaper than they can, they'll drop you.
Which to focus on
- New brand? Retail first. Build the brand, get feedback, prove demand, build reviews.
- Established brand with volume? Add wholesale to unlock capacity.
- Basics or commodity items? Wholesale can be a scaling accelerator.
- Distinctive, higher-margin design pieces? Retail-only often makes sense.
