KYC Policy

How Javern verifies identity and why.

Updated 31 July 2026

Effective date: 2026-07-31

Know-Your-Customer (KYC) is how Javern verifies the identity of people receiving payouts on the Platform. This policy explains what KYC we perform, when it's required, and why.

1. Why KYC

  • Financial regulations in Nigeria require identity verification for accounts receiving payments.
  • Protects Buyers from fraudulent or fake Vendors.
  • Protects Vendors from having their payouts blocked because we can't confirm who they are.

2. Who has to complete KYC

  • Vendors receiving payouts — required. Without KYC, Vendors run on the legacy pending/withdrawable balance and cannot access the Javern Wallet.
  • Buyers — no formal KYC required to shop.
  • All Users — must provide accurate account information (name, email, phone). Repeated inaccurate data can trigger a review.

3. What we verify

Vendor KYC runs through Paystack and requires:

  • BVN (Bank Verification Number).
  • Date of birth.
  • Legal name matching your BVN record.
  • Bank account details in the same name (for payouts).

4. How to complete Vendor KYC

  1. Open the Javern Vendor app and sign in.
  2. Go to your vendor dashboard → "Wallet" (or "Verification").
  3. Enter your BVN and date of birth.
  4. Complete the Paystack verification prompts.
  5. Once verified, your Javern Wallet is activated and any existing balances migrate over.

See How do I verify my BVN? and How do I verify my identity?.

5. What we do with your KYC data

  • We use it to verify who you are, activate your wallet, and process payouts.
  • We store the BVN verification result (verified / rejected) and the linked dedicated virtual account details.
  • We share the necessary data with Paystack, our financial services provider, for verification and transfer.
  • We do not share your BVN with other Vendors, Buyers, or third parties beyond what's needed for verification and settlement.
  • Retention follows the Privacy Policy.

6. Failed verification

If verification fails:

7. Ongoing checks

Javern may re-run identity checks:

  • When you change key account details (name, DOB).
  • If a bank account you're withdrawing to doesn't match your BVN name.
  • If a fraud or compliance concern arises.

Payouts may be held during re-verification.

8. Confidentiality

Only staff who need access for verification, dispute, or compliance purposes can access KYC data. Access is logged.
