How to start a clothing brand in Nigeria

A practical roadmap for starting a clothing brand from scratch in Nigeria.

Updated 31 July 2026

Overview

Starting a clothing brand in Nigeria is more accessible than ever — you don't need a shop, a factory, or a huge budget. What you do need is a clear idea, sensible costs, and the discipline to deliver consistently.

1. Pick a niche

  • What kind of clothing? Streetwear, traditional, luxury, kids, plus-size, athleisure, thrift.
  • Who is it for? Age, style, price point, location.
  • What's your angle? Fit, prints, sustainability, price, styling — pick something you can be known for.

A specific niche beats "everything for everyone" every time.

2. Get the paperwork straight

  • Register a business name with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). See How to register a fashion business.
  • Open a business bank account under the registered name.
  • Get your BVN and Tax Identification Number (TIN) sorted.

3. Design and source

  • Design in-house — sketch, sample, refine. Even one strong signature piece is enough to start.
  • Or source and rebrand — pick a solid supplier, add your branding, focus on curation and marketing.
  • Or dropship — no inventory risk, thinner margins, less brand control. See Dropshipping vs holding inventory.

4. Sample and test

  • Make a small first batch. Wear it. Test with friends. Get real feedback.
  • Iterate before you commit to a bigger production run.

5. Set up your storefront

6. Price to make money

  • Cost your products honestly (materials, labour, packaging, overhead, your time).
  • Add Javern fees (5% commission + ₦500 flat per Order).
  • Add a target margin (2x–4x for most fashion).
  • Check the market and adjust.

See How to price your products and How are my earnings calculated?.

7. Launch

  • Announce on your social channels — friends and family first.
  • Run a launch coupon.
  • Encourage the first 10 buyers to leave reviews.

8. Sustain

  • Consistent drops keep followers engaged.
  • Reinvest early revenue into better photos, packaging, and stock.
  • Track what sells and what doesn't. Cut losers, double down on winners.
  • See How to grow your clothing business online.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping the basics to chase trends.
  • Undercharging to seem cheap — you burn out.
  • Overproducing early — start small, prove demand, then scale.
  • Being everywhere online but nowhere consistently.
