How to reduce returns

Cut return rates by setting the right expectations up front.

Updated 31 July 2026

Overview

Most returns come down to expectations not matching reality — wrong size, colour off, fabric different, or the fit isn't what was implied. Set expectations correctly and returns drop sharply.

Nail sizing

  • Publish detailed size charts for every product. Bust, waist, hip, length in centimetres.
  • Flag anything that runs off standard. "Runs small — size up" saves you the return.
  • Encourage buyers to measure themselves. Link to How to measure your clothing size in your descriptions.
  • Respond to sizing questions in chat fast. A quick answer prevents a wrong choice.

Show the product honestly

  • Multiple angles — front, back, side, close-ups.
  • On-model photos at your store's standard model size, with the size worn stated.
  • Colour-accurate photography. Overly filtered photos = disappointed buyers.
  • Detail shots of fabric texture, prints, and finishing.

Write descriptions that pre-answer questions

  • Fabric, weight, and stretch.
  • Length in cm.
  • Care instructions.
  • Anything unusual: sheerness, lining, elasticity, sound (crinkly synthetic vs quiet cotton).

Fit and quality control before shipping

  • Inspect every item before packing.
  • Iron / steam if needed.
  • Check for loose threads, stains, missing buttons.
  • If a size runs off from the batch, adjust the listing or hold that specific piece back.

Handle sizing exchange requests well

  • Some size exchanges are unavoidable — handle them fairly.
  • Offer a partial refund + keep-the-item path if the buyer is close to fit.
  • A well-handled return often creates a repeat customer.

Track patterns

  • If one product has a much higher return rate, something's off with the listing or the item.
  • Common reasons: fabric different from photos, sizing chart off, colour mismatch.
  • Fix the listing (or the product) and the returns stop.
