How to choose wedding outfits

Overview

Nigerian weddings are a marathon — traditional ceremony, church or nikkai, reception, after-party — and the right outfit depends on which part you're attending, what dress code the couple set, and how much you want to stand out (or blend in with the aso ebi).

Ask three questions first

Which event? Traditional, white/religious, or reception? Each has its own style expectations.
What's the dress code / colour theme? Ask the couple or check the invitation. Many Nigerian weddings set specific aso ebi colours.
How formal is it? A destination beach wedding is very different from a Lagos hall reception.

Traditional weddings

Aso ebi — if the couple set an aso ebi, you can either buy the fabric and get it tailored, or order a pre-made outfit in the same colour family.
Gele and headwraps for women; agbada or senator wear for men.
Beads and coral accents work for both.
Comfortable shoes matter — you'll be up a lot.

White / religious weddings

Women — cocktail dress, a smart midi, or something elegant and modest. Avoid pure white (that's the bride) unless the couple say otherwise.
Men — a suit or well-tailored native. Neutral colours if there's no theme.
Colours — pastels and muted tones are always safe.

Reception and after-party

Reception outfits are usually a step up in glam — think sequins, statement pieces, more colour.
After-party outfits lean more relaxed and dance-friendly — think jumpsuits, midi dresses, ankara looks.
Change of shoes helps — heels for photos, flats for dancing.

Guest etiquette

Don't wear pure white unless specified.
Don't outshine the couple deliberately.
Aso ebi is optional but appreciated — check with the couple.
Photos happen constantly — allow extra time for outfit changes if you're doing multiple looks.
