How to choose sneakers

Pick sneakers that fit, last, and go with your wardrobe.

Updated 31 July 2026

Overview

The right pair of sneakers depends on what you'll wear them for, what you'll wear them with, and how comfortable they need to be. Here's how to narrow it down.

Start with the use case

  • Every day / casual — versatile silhouette, neutral colour, cushioned insole.
  • Fashion / streetwear — statement silhouette (chunky, high-top, colourway) that matches your fits.
  • Running / gym — proper athletic shoes with the right support. Fashion sneakers aren't good for real workouts.
  • Formal-adjacent — clean minimalist leather sneakers work with chinos, trousers, and some traditional wear.

Fit matters most

  • Measure your foot — see Shoe size conversion.
  • There should be about a thumb's width between your longest toe and the front.
  • Toes shouldn't feel cramped side-to-side.
  • Heel shouldn't slip when you walk.
  • Try them at the end of the day when your feet are slightly bigger.

Choose the silhouette

  • Low-top classics (like plimsolls or retro runners) — versatile, easy to style.
  • Chunky / dad sneakers — bolder, work well with baggy or oversized fits.
  • High-tops — sportier, streetwear-adjacent.
  • Minimalist leather sneakers — dressy-casual, work with more of your wardrobe.
  • Slip-ons — laid-back, everyday.

Quality checks

  • Materials — full-grain leather and quality mesh outlast synthetic pleather.
  • Sole — flexible where the foot bends, but solid at the arch. Check the stitching (or bonding) between sole and upper.
  • Insole — removable is a plus; you can swap in an insole for extra comfort.
  • Finish — clean stitching, no glue marks, aligned seams.

Colour and versatility

  • White or off-white leather sneakers — go with almost everything.
  • Black sneakers — reliable second pair, good for evenings.
  • Neutral / earth tones — beige, brown, olive — versatile without being boring.
  • Statement colours — fun but pair fewer other outfits.

Care

  • Keep them out of heavy rain if possible.
  • Clean regularly with a soft brush and mild soap.
  • Air-dry — no direct sun or radiators.
  • Use shoe trees or crumpled paper to hold shape when not being worn.
