How to write better product descriptions
Write product descriptions that actually help buyers buy.
Updated 31 July 2026
Overview
A good product description answers the questions a buyer would otherwise have to ask. That means less back-and-forth in chat, fewer wrong-size returns, and more sales.
Cover these details every time
- Fabric — cotton, linen, polyester blend, ankara, etc.
- Fit — regular, oversized, slim, tailored, cropped.
- Sizing — measurements in cm for each size, or a size chart image.
- Colour — as it appears in real life. Note any variation between screens.
- Length — sleeve, hem, inseam.
- Care — wash and dry instructions.
- What's included — for sets, list every piece.
Structure
- One-line hook — what the product is, in a sentence.
- Key details — fabric, fit, colour, length, sizing.
- Styling suggestion — one or two ideas on what to pair it with.
- Care instructions.
- Anything else the buyer needs to know — "runs small", "sheer, wear a slip underneath", "size up if in between".
Write for the reader
- Be specific. "Soft heavyweight cotton" beats "quality material".
- Talk about fit honestly. "Runs small — size up" saves you a return.
- Skip filler words. "Amazing quality super stunning must-have" tells the buyer nothing.
- Match your brand voice. Playful, minimalist, luxury — whatever it is, be consistent.
For Nigerian buyers specifically
- Sizes vary. State both cm and equivalent UK / US sizes where helpful.
- Note if the fabric is heavy or light — matters for Nigerian weather.
- If the item is made-to-measure or has a lead time, say so clearly.
Formatting tips
- Break descriptions into short paragraphs or bullet points — buyers scan, they don't read.
- Put the most important detail in the first line.
- Include the fit-note or "runs small" warning near the top, not buried at the bottom.
