How to style oversized shirts

Ways to wear an oversized shirt without looking sloppy.

Updated 31 July 2026

Overview

Oversized shirts are a staple in modern streetwear and casual Nigerian style. The trick to wearing them well is balance — pair volume up top with structure or fit somewhere else.

Ways to wear one

  • Half-tuck — tuck the front into your waistband, leave the back loose. Adds structure to the waist and shows off the belt.
  • Full tuck with a belt — great with wide trousers or high-waisted jeans; makes a boxy shirt feel intentional.
  • Open over a tee — leave it unbuttoned as a light overshirt with a plain T-shirt underneath.
  • Knotted at the waist — tie the front hem into a small knot for a shape-defining look.
  • Layered under a vest or waistcoat — the vest gives the outfit a defined silhouette.
  • With shorts — the length works — go for tailored shorts to keep it balanced.

Bottom-half pairings

  • Slim / tapered trousers — balances volume with fit.
  • Wide-leg trousers — full-volume look, good with a tucked shirt.
  • Straight-leg jeans — the classic, works with any tuck.
  • Cycling shorts or bike shorts — for a relaxed feminine look.
  • Midi skirts — pairs oversized shirt with structured shape below.

Colour and print

  • Solid neutrals (white, cream, black, khaki) are the safest starting point.
  • Ankara or bold prints on the shirt: pair with plain bottoms and minimal accessories.
  • Plain shirt + printed bottom: also works — reverse the rule.

Fabric matters

  • Cotton and linen drape nicely and breathe well in Nigerian weather.
  • Heavier oxford cloth holds its shape better if you're going for a structured look.
  • Avoid stiff, boxy synthetics if you want the shirt to fall well when tucked.
