How to price your products
A framework for pricing products so you're profitable and competitive.

Overview
Price too low and you lose money. Price too high and you don't sell. The middle ground is: cover your true costs, add a reasonable margin, and check against the market.
Step 1 — know your true cost per item
Add up:
- Materials / stock cost.
- Production / tailoring cost.
- Packaging.
- Photography and content.
- Time spent (yes, your time has a value).
- Overhead — a share of any rent, subscriptions, or equipment.
If you produce in batches, divide the batch cost by the number of items.
Step 2 — add Javern's fees
Every accepted Order on Javern deducts:
- 5% commission on the product subtotal.
- ₦500 flat service fee per Order.
So if you want to receive X, your product price should account for these being taken out. See How are my earnings calculated?.
Step 3 — add a target margin
- Handmade / low-volume — margins of 2x–4x cost are common.
- Bulk / high-volume — thinner margins, higher volume.
- Premium / bespoke — higher margins reflecting the labour and design.
Step 4 — check the market
- Open Javern and look at similar products from other Vendors.
- Look at Instagram brands in your niche.
- Don't just match the cheapest. Cheapest often loses money.
- Consider what makes yours better — that's your justification for a higher price.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting your time. Your labour is a real cost.
- Ignoring the ₦500 flat fee. It hits every Order regardless of size — small orders take a bigger relative hit.
- Race to the bottom. Undercutting can bring volume but often not profit.
- No differentiation. If it's the same as every other store, price is your only lever. Better to differentiate on quality, service, or brand.
Pricing tactics
- Anchor with a "hero" high-priced item. Makes the rest feel reasonable.
- Round numbers. ₦12,000 feels cleaner than ₦11,950 for premium products; the reverse for value stores.
- Bundles. "Buy two, get 15% off" moves inventory and increases average order value.
- Coupon codes. Time-limited discounts for launches or restocks. See How do I create coupons?.
