How to package orders professionally

Packaging that protects the product, makes the unboxing memorable, and drives repeat sales.

Updated 31 July 2026

Overview

Packaging is the first physical experience your customer has with your brand. Good packaging protects the product, feels intentional, and often ends up on Instagram — which is free marketing.

The essentials

  • Protection first. Whatever else you do, the parcel needs to arrive in perfect condition.
  • Match your brand. Colours, logo, tone. Buyers should recognise your box before they open it.
  • Repeat-purchase nudge. A small thank-you note, a discount code, or a "follow us on Javern" card.

What goes in the parcel

  1. The product, cleanly folded or hung.
  2. Tissue paper or dust bag for premium items.
  3. A branded card or note.
  4. A packing slip so the buyer can check nothing is missing.
  5. A small extra (optional) — a sticker, a fabric care card, a sweet.

Materials that punch above their weight

  • Kraft paper mailers — cheap, sturdy, recyclable.
  • Branded stickers to seal. Cheaper than custom boxes but still branded.
  • Tissue paper in your brand colours — small cost, big feel.
  • Twine or ribbon — adds craft feel.
  • Reusable dust bags for premium items.

Custom vs generic

  • Start with generic mailers and branded stickers. Cheap and effective.
  • Move to branded boxes once volume justifies the cost.
  • Consider a small print run of branded thank-you cards early on.

Protection details

  • Fold garments neatly, ideally with tissue paper between layers.
  • Waterproof the inside layer if you can — Nigerian rain and courier bags are not friends.
  • Bag delicate items in cellophane inside the mailer.
  • Cushion accessories that could get crushed.

Repeat-purchase tactics

  • Include a "next order 10% off" coupon in the parcel. See How do I create coupons?.
  • A polite "follow us on Javern for new drops first" prompt.
  • Ask for a review after they've had a chance to try the item.

Instagram-worthy packaging

  • Consistent brand look means every buyer photo builds your brand.
  • Encourage sharing — a small note like "tag us if you post!" works.
  • Repost customer photos when they share them.
